A car AC that struggles in spring will not cope with a Tricity summer. It is best to deal with problems before the heat arrives.
Signs that your AC needs attention
- The air is not as cold as it used to be
- Cooling is weak until the car is moving
- There is a musty smell from the vents
- You hear new noises when the AC is on
- Airflow from the vents feels weak
Common causes
Weak cooling can come from low refrigerant, which usually points to a leak, or from a problem with the compressor or condenser. Weak airflow is often a clogged cabin air filter. A smell usually comes from moisture and buildup inside the system.
Topping up gas without checking why it was low is often only a short-term fix, so ask for the cause to be found.
Habits that help
- Park in shade when you can
- Open the windows for a moment to release hot air before switching on the AC
- Use recirculation once the cabin starts to cool
- Run the AC regularly, even in cooler months
When to get it checked
If you notice any of the signs above, a car AC check is the best place to start. For a musty cabin, try AC vent sanitisation.
